Meta announces end-to-end encryption for personal conversation and messages on FaceBook and Messenger

ISLAMABAD: Meta Platforms announced the initiation of end-to-end encryption for all personal conversations and calls across Messenger and Facebook.

This encryption feature is being made immediately accessible, though it might take some time for all Messenger accounts to receive the default implementation of end-to-end encryption, according to the social media giant.

Previously, Messenger allowed users to manually activate end-to-end encryption, ensuring that messages were only readable by the sender and intended recipients. With this update, messages will now automatically undergo encryption by default, Meta confirmed.

While Meta’s WhatsApp already employs message encryption, the company emphasizes that encryption plays a crucial role in safeguarding users against cyber threats such as hackers, fraud, and criminal activities.

The implementation of end-to-end encryption has been a subject of debate between corporations and governments.

In September, the British government cautioned Meta against introducing encryption on Instagram and Facebook Messenger without incorporating safety measures to protect children from potential risks of sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, Meta has launched a dedicated website for its Imagine tool, an AI-driven image generator that was initially confined to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp chats.

Now, users can access the Imagine tool directly on the web, making it more widely available. To use the tool, visitors need to log in with a free Meta account on the dedicated Imagine website.

The process involves providing a precise description of the desired image, clicking the Generate button, and receiving four different generated images that ideally match the user’s vision. Users can then select their preferred image, click the ellipsis icon, and choose to download the image in JPG format. It’s worth noting that each generated image comes with a watermark in the corner, indicating its origin as being “imagined with AI.”

Before its transition to a standalone website, Meta’s Imagine tool was primarily designed for creating and sharing images within the chat functionality of Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Integrated into Meta AI, the tool allows users to interact with an AI chatbot or include it in group conversations. In chat, users can activate the image generator by typing “/imagine” followed by a description of the desired image.
